Fair Lawn NJ Theft LawyersA Fair Lawn NJ woman could be on her way to prison after she reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in a tax fraud case.

The suspect, a 43-year-old Fair Lawn resident, owned and operated Santos & Associates in Union City, New Jersey. She was also the tax preparer for the business.

According to officials, the suspect prepared company tax forms that included fraudulent deductions and educational credits that allowed her to receive more than $130,000 in tax refunds.

She reportedly committed the fraud on tax returns in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Federal investigators looked into the suspect’s tax forms and eventually placed her under arrest. She was subsequently charged with a number of fraud offenses.

The suspect was able to avoid trial by reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors. She pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting others in the preparation of false tax returns; in return, prosecutors agreed to drop the other criminal charges against her.

The suspect will have to appear in US District Court in Newark later this year for an official sentencing hearing. She faces a possible sentence of three years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000.
