Two men were placed under arrest after they allegedly stole credit cards and committed identity theft in Rutherford, NJ.
The suspects, a 27-year-old Jersey City NJ man and a 29-year-old Brooklyn NY man, allegedly used bogus credit cards to purchase pre-paid gift cards at a Rite-Aid Pharmacy located on Park Avenue in Rutherford, New Jersey.
Rutherford NJ police got a call about suspicious purchases that were made at the pharmacy. During a subsequent investigation, police learned that some of the transactions had been approved, while others were declined. In just one day, the suspects allegedly purchased gift cards valued in excess of $7,000.
A few days later, one of the suspects allegedly went back to the pharmacy and tried to buy more gift cards, each with a value of $100. The store manager notified the Rutherford Police Department, which quickly dispatched officers to the scene.
When the officers arrived at the store, the suspect reportedly became nervous and switched from paying with a credit card to paying with cash.
While this was going on, the other suspect allegedly attempted to purchase pre-paid gift cards at another cash register. However, when he saw police officers arrived at the store, he quickly exited the pharmacy and fled the scene in a Jeep.
A Rutherford NJ police officer stopped the suspect’s vehicle just a few blocks away. The suspect reportedly informed the officer that he was headed to a friend’s house. However, the suspect could not give the officer a valid address for his friend’s residence.
Meanwhile, police arrested the other suspect at a business located near the pharmacy.
While placing the suspects under arrest, police allegedly found them in possession of 15 bogus credit cards. Rutherford police also reportedly found “numerous” Visa gift cards inside the suspects’ Jeep.
The suspects are charged with identity theft, credit card theft, and receiving stolen property.
After being arrested and charged, the suspects were transported to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey. The suspects are being held at the correctional facility on separate $50,000 bail amounts.
