Fairview NJ police recently arrested a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl.
According to law enforcement, the suspect committed the sexual assault four years ago. The suspect, a 25-year-old Cliffside Park NJ man, allegedly raped the young girl at least one time.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Fairview Police Department conducted a joint investigation into the suspect. Police began the investigation after the victim’s family contacted Fairview police, who then alerted the Special Victims Unit.
Once investigators had enough evidence, the suspect was arrested.
The suspect was subsequently charged with multiple sex crimes, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and child endangerment.
If the suspect is convicted on the most serious aggravated sexual assault charges, he would be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2, anyone who commits an act of sexual penetration with a victim under 13 years of age can be charged with a first degree crime. A conviction for first degree aggravated sexual assault could result in a sentence of 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being placed under arrest and charged, the suspect was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ. He was being held at the jail in lieu of a $300,000 bail amount. If he does eventually secure his release from custody, he will have to avoid any contact with the alleged victim while the charges are pending.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in Bergen County Superior Court soon for an arraignment.
