Police in Northvale New Jersey have arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a juvenile girl.
According to Bergen County prosecutors, the 31-year-old suspect engaged in a number of sexual acts with the underage victim.
The Northvale Police Department started its investigation after getting a report that the suspect had committed a sexual assault. Northvale police then notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which began its own investigation.
Sometime after interviewing the suspect and collecting evidence in the case, Bergen County prosecutors determined that the suspect should be arrested.
If the suspect is convicted of sexual assault, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2, sexual assault is typically classified as a second degree criminal offense. A conviction for second degree sexual assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was being held at the correctional facility on a $150K bail amount.
