Lyndhurst New Jersey police recently arrested a man who has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman as she slept.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect was in the victim’s Lyndhurst NJ residence one night when she passed out. While the victim slept, the suspect allegedly approached her and committed a rape.
The victim later dialed 911 and alerted the Lyndhurst Police Department. She told police officers that the suspect had raped her while she slept and that she actually woke up while she was being sexually assaulted.
The suspect and the victim reportedly knew each other, which is why the suspect had access to her home.
Authorities are currently investigating the sex crime allegations. At this time, it has not been revealed if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the alleged rape.
Lyndhurst NJ detectives already have enough evidence in the case to arrest the suspect. As a result, the suspect has been charged with multiple sex crimes, including aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault.
The suspect, a 35-year-old male who resides in Barnegat, NJ, could be subject to severe penalties if he is eventually convicted on the most serious criminal charges against him. For example, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2 classifies aggravated sexual assault as a first degree felony. A conviction for first degree aggravated sexual assault charges could lead to a sentence of 10-20 years in NJ State Prison.
The suspect is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack NJ in lieu of $100,000 bail.
