Police officers in Wyckoff New Jersey are trying to determine the identities of suspects accused of vandalizing a local cemetery.
According to law enforcement officials, the vandals targeted the Wyckoff Reformed Cemetery, located next to the Wyckoff Reformed Church on Wyckoff Avenue. The suspects allegedly went to the graveyard at night and knocked over around 50 headstones in several rows. Employees at the cemetery did not discoverer the property damage until they arrived at work the following morning.
The cemetery is an important site in Wyckoff that has served the area for more than 100 years.
Detectives with the Wyckoff Police Department are currently investigating the property crime and trying to figure out the identities of the vandals. Anyone who knows anything about the suspects or the graveyard vandalism should get in touch with Wyckoff NJ investigators at 201-891-2121.
If Wyckoff police can identify and find the suspects, the vandals could potentially be charged with criminal mischief. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3, criminal mischief is ordinarily classified as a fourth degree criminal offense. A conviction for fourth degree criminal mischief could result in a sentence of 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison.
