A Ridgewood NJ man allegedly sexually assaulted a young gymnast in the early 1990s.
The suspect is a 54-year-old resident of Ridgewood, New Jersey. According to authorities, the suspect was serving as the underage victim’s gymnastics coach when he committed the sex crimes more than two decades ago. The suspect worked for the Eastern Gymnastics Academy in Cranford, New Jersey.
The suspect reportedly sexually abused the minor at gyms and private homes in Cranford and Mays Landing, NJ. The victim was under the age of 13 at the time of the alleged abuse.
Approximately nine months ago, the victim came forward with the allegations and wrote a detailed letter to the NJ State Police. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Cranford Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, then opened an investigation into the suspect.
Now, after investigators gathered evidence to support the victim’s allegations, the suspect has been arrested and charged with several counts of aggravated sexual assault.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was remanded to the Union County Jail on a $75,000 bail amount. He will need to appear in Union County Superior Court, located in Elizabeth NJ, in order to answer the very serious charges against him.
A conviction on criminal charges of aggravated sexual assault could lead to the suspect being sentenced to up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison. Additionally, the suspect would have to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.
