Mahwah New Jersey police arrested a man who allegedly impersonated a cop with the goal of helping his brother get drug offense charges dropped.
The suspect’s brother, who is from Hopewell Junction, NY, was driving in Mahwah NJ when he allegedly committed a traffic violation. A Mahwah patrol cop subsequently stopped the motorist’s vehicle.
When the officer approached the car and spoke to the driver he allegedly spotted a loose marijuana joint inside the vehicle.
When Mahwah NJ police searched the car, they allegedly found a bag of marijuana, a marijuana joint, and a package of medical pot that was possibly stolen.
The vehicle driver was placed under arrest and processed. However, during processing, the arresting officer reportedly received a phone call from a person identifying himself as “Officer Mackey with the Fishkill Police Department.” The person on the phone claimed that the person being placed under arrest was actually an undercover police officer.
Mahwah police investigated and determined that the caller was actually the motorist’s brother. When the suspect later arrived at Mahwah police headquarters, he was arrested and charged with impersonating a police officer, obstruction of justice, and hindering apprehension.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s brother has also been charged with multiple crimes, including simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and receiving stolen property.
