The suspect is a 45-year-old man from North Bergen, New Jersey. He is employed by Daman Associates Inc., an insurance agency located on High Mountain Road in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect showed up at work in the morning and put a handgun in his desk.
When a co-worker at the business saw the weapon in the suspect’s desk, he dialed 911 and contacted the Franklin Lakes Police Department. Franklin Lakes NJ detectives were sent to the building, where they talked to the suspect and other workers.
Franklin Lakes police officers investigated and determined that enough evidence existed to arrest the suspect. He was then charged with illegal possession of a handgun.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on weapons offense charges, he would be subject to significant criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(b), unlawful possession of a handgun is a second degree crime. Additionally, the New Jersey Graves Act imposes a minimum mandatory term of incarceration on offenders convicted of illegal handgun possession.
