Edgewater Fraud Crime Law FirmA husband and wife who live in Edgewater NJ were recently arrested and charged with several theft and fraud offenses for allegedly stealing in excess of one million dollars.

The suspects, a 33-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, are from Edgewater in Bergen County, New Jersey. The couple operates Sunrise Motors Inc., a used car dealership in South Hackensack NJ. According to authorities, the suspects defrauded the government when they failed to pay required sales tax.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the South Hackensack Police Department launched an investigation after getting a number of complaints from the customers of the car dealership. Investigators looked into the matter and determined that the suspects failed to pay $1.24 million of the $1.6 million in NJ sales tax that they collected at the South Hackensack dealership. Instead of paying the money, the Edgewater suspects reportedly kept the funds for their personal use.

Both suspects were eventually placed under arrest. The husband has been charged with several fraud crimes, including misapplication of entrusted funds, failure to turn over collected tax, misconduct by a corporate official, and filing a false tax return. Meanwhile, the female suspect has been charged with misapplication of entrusted funds and filing a fraudulent tax return.

After being arrested and processed, the suspects secured their releases from the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ.
